The Short Version

Don't have time to read everything? Here's what I wish someone told me before I landed in Dubai.

My Top 5 Payment Tips for UAE

  • Carry AED 50-100 in small bills. Not for emergencies - for the 10% of places that genuinely don't take cards.
  • Get a UAE bank account ASAP. Foreign card fees add up faster than you'd think.
  • Set up Apple Pay or Samsung Pay. Most places prefer contactless over chip-and-PIN.
  • Avoid airport exchanges. Rates are brutal. Use ATMs from major banks instead.
  • Learn which places are cash-only. Old Dubai, small groceries, parking machines - save yourself the walk of shame to an ATM.
